Porter started MOLA
in May 2000. Prior to founding MOLA, he spent four years directing outdoor
education programs for the Missoula YMCA. He also served as an instructor at
an outdoor natural science center; a wilderness program for youth at risk;
Missoula Parks & Recreation, facilitating team-building activities; and the
University of Montana, involving courses in Environmental Science and the
Conservation & Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) program. Porter has
also worked for:

Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute, doing a study of user impacts at
backcountry campsites; ▪
USFS as a wilderness ranger looking at density, crowding, carrying capacity,
user impacts, and user satisfaction of wilderness areas; and, ▪
Texas A&M University on a study of water quality standards.
